Bierzo: A unique wine in a unique land.

PDO Bierzo is located in the natural region of El Bierzo,  in theWest of the province of León. It borders Lugo, Orense, Asturias and Leon regions of Mountain and Cabrera, in addition to the plateau. It is therefore a transition zone between the Asturian, Leonese,  Castilian  and Galician lands.

The region of El Bierzo, consists of two distinct geographical entities that are: High Bierzo, which is a mountainous area with small valleys and eminently mining, and Low Bierzo, which has a broad depression between 200 and 800 m altitude, with a small valley. This is a predominantly agricultural area where lies the vineyards.

The vineyards of PDO Bierzo, is located between 450 and 700 m. .The predominant soil is a dun ground  rich in humus, slightly acidic and limestone, but also with abundant shale and slates coming from an upland erosion valley .

The climate of the region is a compendium of Atlantic influences, due to its proximity to the mainland coasts of Galicia and its proximity to the plateau. Translating this into a soft and mild climate Because of its continental influence has lots of sunshine hours (2200 hours of annual average), while the Atlantic influence provides a medium-high rainfall. These climatic characteristics make El Bierzo possesses a very distinctive climate, which makes the grapes ripen earlier than in other wine regions. This, joined  with the grape varieties which are used, mainly Mencia and Godello, makes wines from El Bierzo possess unique features you will not find in other wines.
